Another World Library will be holding a workshop and conversation at Arts Gen on the 21th of January 2023, called Irresistible Futures. The workshop will run over two hours and will be exploring glimmers of possible futures through moments of desire and pleasure in the present, drawing on José Esteban Muñoz’s book, Cruising Utopia.

Where dystopias can fuel change through fear of what may go wrong, often amplifying the horrors of the present, utopias can fuel change through offering the possibility of something better, drawing on human longing, desire, and unmet needs.

How can we explore futures in ways that critically engage realities of social injustice, climate disaster and neoliberal capitalist deathscapes, while also thinking of possibilities for better ways of being? How can we draw on moments of pleasure in the present to extrapolate more of them in the future?

As Toni Cade Bambara writes, “the job of the writer is to make revolution irresistible” —so how can we imagine and write irresistible futures?

Another World Library is a research and art project, based on the importance of imagining socially and ecologically just futures in community. AW has curated a shelf of books for the new Arts Gen Library and will be running a 2 hour workshop, in the Arts Gen space, called Irresistible Futures.
