Out in Public

Out In Public is an online exhibition featuring the stories of 6-8 Queer Blak, Indigenous and People-of-Colour (BIPOC) and their relationship with Naarm’s local cruising spots, also known as “beats.”

In Australia, the term beat is used to refer to an area frequented by queer, trans, gay men and non-gay- identifying men who have sex with men (MSM) who are looking for casual sex, and where sexual acts occur.

In this work, viewers are invited to listen in, read, and explore different sites of Queer cultural significance across Naarm or in the comforts of their own home. Through the use of SonicMaps, different stories will be triggered when the person is in the area where the audio-file is geo-tagged. Listeners can also listen and engage with these stories in the comforts of their own home via Instagram & SonicMaps.

For the next 8-10 weeks, a person’s story will be introduced on Emil (aka Babydilf)’s Instagram account.

The aim of this project is to capture the ephemeral; to learn from one another; to celebrate the resilience of our Queer culture; and to make space for oral histories that are seldom heard.
