Out in Public

Emil Cañita

You are invited to listen in, read, and explore different sites of Queer cultural significance across Naarm. ‘Out in Public’ is an online exhibition and walk featuring the stories of 6 Queer Blak, Global Indigenous and People-of-Colour and their relationship with Naarm’s local cruising spots, also known as “beats”.

In Australia, the term beat is used to refer to an area frequented by queer, trans, gay men and non-gay- identifying men who have sex with men (MSM) who are looking for casual sex, and where sexual acts occur.

The aim of this project is to capture the ephemeral; to learn from one another; to celebrate the resilience of our Queer culture; and to make space for oral histories that are seldom heard. As you move around the city, different stories will come alive via SonicMaps, letting you walk through and around spaces while listening to contributor’s share.

Artist Emil Cañita will introduce a person’s story via their Instagram account. Access Out In Public via Instagram, click here.
